The Right Road

There is nothing worse than being lost.  Confusion, fear and depression can take over.  If you are not careful you can end up simply going in circles.

Life is the same way.  There are thousands of conflicting paths that all intersect at our feet each morning.  Without a guide we’re lost.  How can we make sense of it all?  Which path will bring us to the place we want to be?

Psalm 25:4-5
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

The Holy Spirit wants to lead us though the tangled network of choices that lay before us.  Only He knows the outcome of each path, whether taken or not.  He has the wisdom to bring us victoriously into the destiny God has prepared for each of us personally.

There is no better place to start hearing the voice of the Lord than in a quiet place of prayer each morning.  Here you can be free of the distractions that are constantly begging for your attention.  Use your time in the Lord’s presence to strengthen your relationship with Him.  I know that you will find that it is time well spent, as your path grows clearer before you.

Proverb – Disgrace or Wisdom?

Proverbs 11:2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

We all want to be a success.  Solomon, who wrote these nuggets of wisdom, understood what it took to be successful.  He gives us advice that is timeless – as true today as it was the day it was written.

In this proverb, he gives us two contrasting truths, one negative and one positive.  The first deals with pride.  Please understand, we all need a healthy amount of pride to be able to function correctly.  Taking pride in your work is what helps you to advance.  This is not the pride he is talking about here.

The pride that hurts me is the view that I’m better than everybody else.  I guess it could best be described as arrogance.  The rejection of any help from others is a symptom of this condition.  After all, why would we need help from this rabble – they all need our help.

The problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to disgrace.  What that word literally means is that your opinion is largely ignored.  Have you ever noticed that people who act like they know everything, are rarely gone to for advice.  Solomon tells us that quickest way to being ignored is through arrogance.

Humility is just the opposite.  It understands that there are people you need to go to for advice and help along the way.  There are those who know more than you on certain subjects.  As you listen to them and learn from their experience, you start to grow in wisdom and knowledge.

Eventually, people start seeing those same qualities in you.  They come to you for advice.  Humility is the road to advancement in the kingdom of God.

We all have the choice.  Do we want disgrace or wisdom?  The road we take determines our destination.  If you want to be a person who influences the lives of others, then choose the path that leads through humility – it reaps the best rewards.

God’s Wisdom

Proverbs 8:25-26
Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world.

This verse comes from a very beautiful section in the book of Proverbs.  Here Solomon uses the writing style of personification to speak for wisdom.

We are told that before creation was begun God had already mapped out His wisdom.  That is a comforting thought.  God’s wisdom is not a response to any event.  There is nothing that ever takes God by surprise.  On the contrary, all of creation is an outgrowth of God’s wisdom.

I remember the day that I committed my life to the Lord, Jesus Christ.  When that happened, the Lord didn’t sit down with the Holy Spirit and say, “Now we have to figure out how to fit Nick into the kingdom.”  Before I was born, my life was designed exclusively with His plan in mind.  My life was made to function best in His wisdom.

This is why seeking His wisdom should be your number one priority.  God wants the very best for your life.  He has a plan for you that was established before the mountains and rivers were created.  Seek out the wisdom of God for your life.  Only then can you know the complete joy of personal fulfillment.
